Textual transcript of the video :
The presenter: this morning, to demonstrate his interest in the campaign organised by the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, President François Mitterrand in person inaugurated the 2nd international Paris book show. Luce Perrot had the impression that she was watching a writer, rather than a President of the Republic. She brings you this report.
The report: contrary to customary assertions, François Mitterrand was absolutely on time to inaugurate the 2nd Book Show at the Grand Palais this morning. The President of the Republic was accompanied by his Minister of Culture Jack Lang, the author Paul Guimard, and the Minister of the Interior, Gaston Deferre, who insisted that he was simply there to accompany his wife, the writer Edmonde Charles-Roux.
As the President walked from one publisher to the next, the writer emerged. Literature is clearly a world in which he is at home. Thus I learned that he was currently reading the letters of Chateaubriand and Jacques Lacarrière's book on Herodotus. I also noted that Raymond Aron, like anybody else, was not unmoved when the President came up to congratulate him.
"My literary career ended on May 10, when I was elected president. Since then I've had no time for writing», acknowledged the President looking back wistfully on the works of François Mitterrand. Then it was the turn of Edmonde Charles-Roux to play the hostess. A quick hello to Marie Cardinal and Lucien Bodard; they promise to have lunch together. The president is happy. This is clearly his family. Another quick tour, some handshakes, the visit was longer than planned. Clearly François Mitterrand is reluctant to leave.
