Front pageSaut Hermès in the Grand Palais![]() On April 15, 16 and 17, the Grand Palais will again be paying tribute to horses and horsemanship. For the 2nd year running, Saut Hermès will be in the Nave, hosting an international horse show with the world’s top performers. Organised by Hermès, in partnership with GL events, this high-prestige event revives an equestrian tradition in the Grand Palais that was immensely popular from the building’s opening in 1901 till 1957. At the outstanding three-day show, the world’s 35 top riders will be disputing the five CSI 5-star jumping events, while the 14 most exciting young horsemen and women compete for the brand new Talents Hermès award. In addition to the competition, it is the world of horses and horsemanship that will be celebrated in a setting designed by Hilton McConnico, with a demonstration of Hermès saddleware, a pony display and a bookshop devoted to riding. Finally, during the interludes between the competitions, the public will be able to enjoy an original equestrian spectacular dreamed up by Jean-François Pignon, with musical accompaniment by the Kalena choir from Ukraine. Three questions for...Bruno Guillon, CEO, Hermès France![]() Bruno Guillon © D.R. Quadriges: This is the second time that Saut Hermès will have been held at the Grand Palais. What decided you to continue the show jumping event that you inaugurated last year in the Nave? From the start we wanted to persuade riders to take part in the competition. Their response was very positive, and they all wanted to come back this year. The world’s top riders will be there on April 15, 16 and 17. This bears out our original idea that the Saut Hermès in the Grand Palais could become an annual event. What’s more we have been in close daily contact with the FEI and the FFE, who backed us from the start, to ensure that the organization of this CSI five-star competition goes smoothly. Quadriges: What will be new this year compared to last year? In 2010, we introduced the original idea of a competition ─ the Saut Hermès ─ for a male/female duo of riders of the same nationality. In 2011, in addition to the CSI 5* events, we are introducing three original events called "Les Talents Hermès”. This will feature young riders, under 25, selected by their national federations, who will be competing in two individual events and one event for two riders with the same nationality. The riders will be coached by champions from their own country. This principle echoes Hermès’ own attachment to the handing down of knowhow from one generation to the next. Quadriges: Can you tell us more about the equestrian spectacular? Just like last year, the show has been created specifically for Saut Hermès at the Grand Palais. This year’s guest, Jean-François Pignon, designed his tableaux to be accompanied by the Kalena Choir from Ukraine. EventInternational Antiquarian Book Fair and International Fine Print Fair![]() For the 5th year running, the Antiquarian Book Fair is to be held in the Nave of the Grand Palais. A unique event, it reflects the wealth and diversity of the world’s cultural heritage and from April 29 to May 1 showcases a collection of outstanding works. Manuscripts, valuable editions, highbrow or lowbrow literature, rare or unusual books, photographs, old maps, prints and drawings. Everything on show here inspires curiosity, interest, amazement and desire among the best-informed collectors and the general public alike. This year, the show has invited the Jacques Doucet Library which has chosen to present a number of milestone works illustrating the literary history of France, from Baudelaire to the present day. As at previous editions, the show will feature talks, presentations and a stall with low-budget items for debutant collectors. EventOdilon Redon, prince of dream![]() A contemporary of the Impressionists, Odilon Redon (1840-1916) is still the artist of mystery and the subconscious. He played a key role in the advent of symbolism before being upheld by the young generation of colourful painters who formed the Nabi and Fauve movements. He was subsequently considered as a precursor of surrealism. Over 170 works form a timeline that shows Redon’s stylistic and thematic development along the path from shadow to light. The new exhibition at the Galeries nationales is organised by Rmn-Grand Palais, the Musée d’Orsay, the urban district council of Montpellier with the Musée Fabre, and with special support from the French National Library. . AppointmentsValérie Vesque-Jeancard and Laurent SaloméOn March 29 2011, Jean-Paul Cluzel, President of the Rmn-Grand Palais, appointed Valérie Vesque-Jeancard as Delegate General Managing Director and Laurent Salomé as Scientific Director of the organisation. Valérie Vesque-Jeancard graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in 1988, and the Ecole nationale des Ponts et Chaussées and also holds a DEA diploma in economic analysis and policies. She held positions of responsibility at the World Bank, and the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industry, before joining the Cour des comptes (the Court of Audit), then the French National Library, where she was appointed Deputy General Managing Director at the start of 2006. In January 2010 she joined the Ministry of Culture and Communication as Assistant Secretary General. Laurent Salomé is a graduate of the Ecole supérieure de Commerce de Paris, the Ecole du Louvre and the Ecole du Patrimoine. Senior curator of heritage, he has also worked successively, since 1990, as assistant to the director of the Grenoble Museum and the Fine Arts Museum in Rennes. Since April 2001 he has been Director of Rouens city museums (Fine Arts, Ceramic and Le Secq des Tournelles). He has organised some 80 temporary exhibitions and written or co-written some 35 publications. Facts and figuresLooking back at March![]() Michel Platini in the Nave © Coll. Grand Palais, Mirco Magliocca In March, three exhibitions opened at the Galeries nationales: "Nature and the Ideal” traces the birth of the art of landscape painting in Rome at the start of the 17th century. A new exhibition opened paying tribute to the late, great poet Aimé Césaire, and highlighting his friendships with two major painters: Lam and Picasso. The show is part of a year-long celebration of French overseas territories. Finally, "Odilon Redon, Prince of dream” presents a timeline through the work of a fin de siècle French painter, offering an opportunity to rediscover the deep and original individuality of an artist overlooked in recent years. Our busy arts calendar continued in the Nave from March 31 to April 3 with ArtParis, a major event on the international contemporary art calendar. Tuesdays at the Grand PalaisCycle: Spirituality![]() At a time when choice of faith and how it is practised are increasingly at the centre of public debate, a gulf of misunderstanding seems to be widening between the world of politics and the spiritual sphere. While the latter speaks to mankind, the former addresses only the citizen. Yet, we generally fall into both categories! So how do we reconcile equality and religious freedom in contemporary society? Tuesday May 3: How do democracies find a way to deal with religious issues? The viewpoint of youthEpisode 6: Lam and slam![]() Every month, we invite the Lycée Jacques-Feyder, a Grand Palais partner for the last three years, to write for Quadriges. In their own words and from their own viewpoint, pupils at the high school will talk about the building, the exhibitions, and the professionals they meet there. Episode 6: Lam and slam On Tuesday March 22, our class, preparing a diploma in tourism, had the honour of being invited to the premiere of "slam tours” for schools at the "Aimé Césaire, Lam, Picasso” exhibition at the Galeries nationales in the Grand Palais. The exhibition traces the lives of these artists, their friendship and the artistic bonds they created over the years. Racism, slavery, war and other themes that have been part of our history were discussed and illustrated by a lecturer and… slammer: Emanuel Campo. The "slam” touch brought extra vitality to the exhibition. This form is still in its infancy and it was a really good way to present the exhibition to an audience like us, representing a young generation. It made a complete change and, for us, the visit would not have been the same without it. As we are studying in the field of tourism, it gave us plenty of ideas for future cultural mediation projects. It isn’t often that you see ideas like this at an exhibition. Emmanuel Campo explained that when he set out to write his texts, he always started by jotting down a few key words and a list of impressions. From our visit we took away our own impressions, summed up in this list: tearing, wounds, identity, roots, anger, revolt, friendship, hope! A word from the presidentThe ambition of the Rmn-Grand Palais is to reach out to new and different audiences. In March it seems that we succeeded, drawing lovers of art, poetry and today’s creative scene to the Grand Palais to discover how landscapes were invented in the "Nature and the Ideal” exhibition; to rediscover the painter Odilon Redon at the first retrospective since 1956; to learn about the productive friendships between a poet ─ Césaire ─ and two painters ─ Picasso and Lam; and to explore the wide range of works on show at ArtParis, the flagship event for contemporary galleries. The first e-catalogue on iPadFor the first time, Rmn-Grand Palais is bringing out an exhibition catalogue on iPad: Odilon Redon. Available in French on Apple Store, the application is part of a new collection of e-catalogues. With more than 450 pages, 330 masterpieces in HD, the ability to zoom in to x 5, watch videos, use bookmarks, and jot down notes, the application is an interactive, fun way to explore the work of Odilon Redon. Le Grand Palais, catalogue déraisonnéThe Grand Palais as you have never seen it before. This is what this new book of photographs sets out to bring you. For two years, Raphaël Gaillarde and his camera explored every corner of the building. His selected shots reveal a wide range of moods, with a preference for behind-the-scenes views and some unexpected curiosities. His work is accompanied by original texts by Tonino Benacquista who imagined the strangest, most incredible events inspired by the sheer scale of the Grand Palais. Though the book goes beyond the bounds of the rational, the price tag remains extremely reasonable: just 35!
