Front pageSaut Hermès at the Grand Palais![]() Show jumping returns to the Grand Palais. Renewing a tradition that made these events a regular part of life in the Nave from 1901 till 1957, the Saut Hermès brings horses and horsemanship back to downtown Paris. The splendid decor will feature a paddock and grandstand seating for 4,000 around a show jumping arena that has been classified as CSI 5* category by the French and International Equestrian Federations. The world's top thirty riders will jump off on April 3 and 4 for the Hermès Grand Prix, worth total prize money of 200,000 €! Throughout this outstanding weekend, every aspect of the horse, historic emblem of the Hermès brand, will be celebrated through "Equestrian fantasias", combining sport, culture and horsemanship. A spectacular, original show by legendary trainer Bartabas, a photographic exhibition, the reconstitution of a 1924 Hermès booth, and workshops on silk and leather crafts will give visitors insights into the magical world of the legendary harness maker. Three questions for…Bruno Guillon, CEO of Hermès FranceQuadriges: How did the idea for Saut Hermès at the Grand Palais come about? The horse is at the heart of the Hermès story, and the Grand Palais is in the heart of Paris... When Hermès started business it was as a saddler and harness maker, and Hermès has always worked for its first ever customer: the horse. The Grand Palais is just a few streets away from the company's headquarters on Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The Nave is a major a venue for the arts and culture, with its baroque architecture of glass and steel and immense volumes, and is an outstanding setting for this spectacular show celebrating every aspect of horses and horsemanship. Quadriges: Recreating an arena, a paddock, grandstands, stables and a decor can't have been easy! How did you go about it? To physically stage the event, Hermès brought in GL Events, an international group specialised in event engineering. The two partners also asked Michel Robert to produce a design for the actual show jumping event. There will be over one hundred horses in the Nave of the Grand Palais over the course of the weekend. Quadriges: What are you hoping the Saut Hermès will do? My hope is that these competitions will put a spring in the step of the riders and bring springtime to the hearts of the spectators! Do you speak boardsport? The A to Z of Orangina Gliss & Mix![]() Fancy seeing a mountain of snow in the Grand Palais in mid-April? If you do, the Nave will be the place to be on Saturday 24 April! Orangina Gliss & Mix awaits you from 8:00 pm till 5:00 am for an explosive night of boardsports and music. A sensational, unmissable event for fans of wakeboarding, snowboarding and skiing. For those of you who aren't conversant with the subtleties of boardsport lingo, Quadriges has put together a short glossary: Orangina Gliss: boardsports will be the central theme of the party! A demonstration of snowboarding, skiing and wakeboarding will be on the programme in the Nave, along with a ski slope and two pools. Orangina Mix: an eclectic choice of today's music will feature hip-hop, rock and electro. Snowboard: with your feet on the board and a thick layer of snow; whoosh you're off! Wakeboard: mix the techniques of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing and you get wakeboarding. Ramps will be specially installed to enable spectacular jumps, with truly thrilling action guaranteed! Dancefloor: one thousand square meters (10,000 sq. ft.) on which to let go to a mix of musical styles, with stars of rap and DJs to set the dance floor on fire: Joey Starr, Naughty J, Cut Killer, Etienne de Crécy, Izia, Brodinsky… Riders: fearless hardcore boardsport enthusiasts. Perfect balance is a prerequisite! Tricks: the acrobatic figures executed by "riders" - well, at least, the best! Big Air: from the snowy slopes the athletes will propel themselves from a height of 25 metres (80 feet) to execute the most spectacular jumps. Gliss contests: competitions between rival «riders». EventInternational Antiquarian Book Fair and International Fine Print FairFor the fourth year in succession, the Antiquarian Book Fair is being hosted by the Nave of the Grand Palais. This year's guest of honour is France's Inter-University Library of Medicine and Odontology. With holdings including collections that date back to the 14th century, the Library will be presenting a selection of its finest pieces illustrating the history of Western medicine, while the theme of the fair will be the human body. Regular visitors will find the usual programme of talks, demonstrations and other events, and a booth for book lovers with items for every pocket, from 20 to 300 €. The special guest at the Fine Print Fair is the Department of Fine Prints and Photography of the French National Library, which will be presenting part of its collection. Among the new features, the Show will for the first time include a section devoted to drawings. Cluzel reportJean-Paul Cluzel will be submitting the conclusions of the major Grand Palais review process that he has been chairing to the French President in April, along with his strategic proposals for the building's future. What goes into restoration? A special series on craftsmanshipThe rotundas![]() The repainted ceiling of the Alexandre-III rotunda © Coll. Grand Palais / F. Tomasi Quadriges continues to explore the crafts that are involved in a restoration project. In January we looked at staff, in February at mosaic, and in March at joinery. This month we take a look at the painters who have been working on the restoration of the Rotundas and the South-East Gallery. House painters: revitalising the work of their predecessors Quadriges talked to Brigitte Thomas, quantity surveyor and project manager at Trouvé, a specialised painting and decorating firm. What did your work at the Grand Palais consist of? Our company did the white, ivory and mignonette green paintwork on the staff caissons in the rotunda and the south-east gallery. Why did you add a patina? It brings a light, decorative transparent effect that is pleasing to the eye. What about the stats? How many pots of paint did you use and how many people worked on the job? For the 800 m2 (8,600 sq. ft.) of the south-east gallery and the 200 m2 (2,150 sq. ft.) of each rotunda, we used around one hundred pots of paint and had five people working on site. Tuesdays at the Grand PalaisThis month’s cycle: the written word![]() Students of French are sure to be puzzled at times by the intricacies of spelling. Why, for example, is there a double "n" in "rationnel", while "rationalisation" only has one? French spelling is recognised as being one of the most complex in the world, and there are those who advocate simplification... Prefacing the opening of the Antiquarian Book Fair on April 18, our Tuesdays at the Grand Palais offer a new cycle devoted to the written word, opening with a debate on spelling. Tuesday March 30: Should we make spelling simpler? with Claude Gruaz, (president of the association Études pour une rationalisation de l'orthographe française d'aujourd'hui ), Serge Koster (grammarian), Xavier North (delegate general for the French language and the languages of France) Tuesday April 6: From the papyrus to the e-book, what future for books? with Jean-Claude Carrière (author), Philippe Colombet (head of Google's book scanning project at Google Recherche de Livres), Philippe Lefait (journalist), Jean-Yves Mollier, professor of contemporary history. Tuesday April 13: Is the "débat d'idées" just fashionable chat or a necessity? The Tuesdays will take a break during the school holidays and will be back on May 4 for a new cycle devoted to sustainable development. |
A word from the presidentThe programme for the month of April is particularly eclectic, with three popular and high-profile events embodying the different facets of the building's very special potential: in a tribute to the equestrian history of the Grand Palais, Saut Hermès creates a bridge between the age-old tradition of horses and horsemanship and the modern era; the International Antiquarian Book Fair and International Fine Print Fair give pride of place to the arts and crafts of book-making; finally, Orangina Gliss & Mix is a big spectacular for young people, combining boardsports and music in a party atmosphere.
