And the winner is...

On August 30 2008 the virtual tour of the Grand Palais won the FWA (Favorite Website Award Site of the Day). This international prize is awarded in recognition of the most innovative and creative Web sites. It is a great reward for the twenty members of the project team who, for six months, worked their way through thousands of calculations, photos and drawings.

Highlight of the month

A fantastic garden...

The Biennale des antiquaires will run from September 11-21 2008. A landmark on the art market calendar, it attracts professionals of worldwide repute, covering just about every area of antiques, fine arts and jewellery. For this 24th edition, the Nave will be transformed into a giant greenhouse in a scenography designed by Patrick Bazanan. To mark the occasion, it will this year welcome 95 exhibitors, with eight newcomers including bookseller Jean-Claude Vrain and jeweller De Grisogno. An outstanding opportunity to unearth a rare gem from among the 8,000 items on show on over 44,000 square feet of display space.

Designing a setting for the Biennale des antiquaires

In 2008, the 24th Biennale des antiquaires will be reeling back the years to the first editions staged in the Nave of the Grand Palais in the 1960s. A fairytale decor and sumptuous scenography have been designed to magnify the treasures of artistic heritage on show.
The centrepiece is the gigantic garden planted out in the Nave, giving the Grand Palais a completely original appearance. On August 20 the first articulated lorries started to arrive at the Grand Palais. Twenty one days later, everything was in place, the whole job requiring a task force of 300, and visitors could now discover the four main themes developed by scenographer Patrick Bazanan: the Zen garden, the woodland undergrowth, the rose garden and the Mediterranean garden. To complete the botanical illusion, a vegetable garden and an orchard have been planted close to a restaurant serving top-class cuisine.
Art de vivre, pleasure and flavours will be the hallmark of the 2008 edition in an imaginative decor that subtly and successfully creates a powerful setting while leaving pride of place for the works on show.

Three questions for...

With a selection of outstanding pieces, the Cartier display will be one not to miss at the 24th Biennale des antiquaires.

Quadriges: What does the Grand Palais mean to Cartier?
It is a great source of satisfaction for us to be here at the Grand Palais, a wonderful setting in which to display our jewellery. There are several objective reasons why we want to be here: the geographical location, the light and space in the Nave, and also intangible factors such as the history and prestige of the venue.

Quadriges: Can you tell us something about this year's star pieces?
All our pieces are stars. Seriously, for Cartier, the Biennale means excellence, and the only pieces we shall be showing the public are unique and have never been shown before. What will also be special  is that, in addition to the very best in contemporary jewellery designs, we shall be bringing older pieces from the "Cartier tradition" that we have repurchased, authenticated and, if necessary, restored, based on sources in the Cartier archives. This year, we are showcasing 27 old and 60 contemporary pieces, with the central theme of "chimera, dragons and creatures of the imagination".

Quadriges: What is the payback from the Biennale?
The Biennale is a commercial show so everything will be on sale, but it's also an amazing shop window, enabling us to present our jewellery to the Biennale's traditional clients and to other potential buyers from abroad. By showing old pieces that have never been on sale before, we also have our rightful place among the antique dealers at an event that is one of the world's finest showcases for objets d'art.

A word from the president

Autumn is on its way in, but in the Grand Palais, the leaves will not be turning gold just yet, and the trees will not be bare. Quite the contrary in fact, because this September the Nave will be a mass of greenery. Emerald banana plants will tower up from the floor, alongside fragrant lemon trees or the delicate pink flowers of oleander. It is in this giant greenhouse that we shall be staging the 24th Biennale des antiquaires. A botanical garden, in which the seasons will be appropriately on hold in honour of the timeless treasures on show: 18th century and Art deco furniture, 19th century antiques and jewellery, and much more… All the natural shades of green combining with the mignonette of the Nave to sustain a sense of summer.

For this 25th edition, the European Heritage Days will be giving pride of place to heritage and creativity. The Grand Palais is contributing to the event through the virtual tour of the Nave and an exclusive animated computer graphic on its Web site. With unsuspected treasures and remarkable video footage this is a new way to discover and explore the architecture and life of the building.
