Front pageA prince in the Grand Palais![]() Outstanding. Original. Unique. There is no end to the superlatives that can apply to the magic event to be held in the Grand Palais this week-end: the American superstar Prince will give two impromptu concerts in the Nave on Sunday October 11 at 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm. The idea came to him when he attended the Chanel fashion show on October 6. He was so impressed by the splendour of the Nave that he came back the next day for a closer look and spontaneously decided to put on two concerts entitled "All day / all night". 5,500 tickets are on sale for each concert. EventFIAC![]() True to tradition, this autumn the Grand Palais will host FIAC, one of the biggest fairs on the international contemporary art market. For its 36th edition, modern and contemporary art will be represented by 114 galleries in the Nave including 29 new exhibitors from Europe and the USA. In 2009 the Grand Palais will be innovating as eight of the world's leading international galleries will, for the first time, jointly present modern works of major significance in an area of 300 m2, placing dealers at the heart of the art market. The originality of the initiative, called the "modern project" is emblematic of a concept that is central to the mission of the Grand Palais: the avant-garde. With painting, sculpture, photography and design, there will be something for everyone, professionals and public alike. Three questions for...Kamel Mennour, gallery ownerQuadriges: This year your gallery celebrates its 10th anniversary. Can you tell us something about what will you be bringing and why? The Fair is increasingly international, so we thought it would be appropriate to invite two partner galleries, Jan Mot from Belgian and Johann Koenig from Berlin to share a booth, creating a Paris-Brussels-Berlin axis. Taking an inventive approach by mixing artists reinforces the international dimension of the event. Quadriges: What is your perception of the Grand Palais? What does it mean to you to be exhibiting at Fiac in the Nave? FIAC is a magnetic event partly because of the initiatives taken by Martin Bethenod and Jennifer Flay and also because of the prestige of the Grand Palais. In such a superb setting that borders on the sublime the galleries have a responsibility to show the finest work. I was very happy when FIAC returned to the Grand Palais a few years ago. The venue is consistent with the aim of the project as conceived by Martin and Jennifer. Quadriges: What does being at FIAC do for your gallery? How do you rank FIAC in the Grand Palais as an international art market event? FIAC sets trends. It's always a big event, a very special moment when we get to meet collectors, curators, the press and the public. Exhibiting at FIAC means showing respect. In the past this wasn't always the case. My gallery has been going for 10 years. That's not a lot, but it's enough to appreciate that this international Fair is back on track. FIAC is once again an event that cannot be missed. Rave or reverie?![]() © Coll. Grand Palais / François Tomasi 8,000 young people took the Nave by storm on the night of September 25 to the throbbing sound of electro music. Organised by SFR, the first electro night at the Grand Palais was a huge success. From 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, the biggest DJs took turns to pump up the volume: Birdy Nam Nam, Felix Da Housecat, Etienne de Crécy, young talents like Tknik and Signal, and the rising star of the French touch: Mondkopf. On the green lawn embellished with red cushions, or at the foot of the luminous cube flashing to the rhythm and sounds of Etienne de Crécy, the mood was electric and the clubbers wild. For those who couldn't make it to the party, or want to live it all over again, a video has captured highlights of this unforgettable event in the Nave. At this writing 5,000 people have already watched the video of the first Electro night at the Grand Palais on Dailymotion! FocusThe Grand Palais iPhone application is a hitThe Grand Palais is the second cultural site in France to offer an iPhone application (after the Cluny National Museum of the Middle Ages). This initiative illustrates the Grand Palais' commitment to multiplying the opportunities to access the history and life of a building that is such an emblem of French heritage. The i-phone application brings an instructive and entertaining information content in French and English, including the story of how the Grand Palais was built and restored (with the secret of its mignonette green), the programme, a behind-the-scenes look at the preparation of an event, the description of the beehives being installed on the roof of the building, and top personalities like Karl Lagerfeld and Daniel Buren contributing their own stories of the Grand Palais. The Grand Palais application has been a huge hit with the public: posted on the iTunes home page, it has been downloaded more than 20,000 times and is one of the leading new features. In the travel category, the Grand Palais hit count is secondly only to Google Earth! The Grand Palais networkJoin the Grand Palais community!Be a Grand Palais early riser. The Grand Palais and publisher Presses universitaires de France will be kicking off the season with a cycle devoted to a very French theme: gastronomy. Just like last year, the lecture/debates will be moderated by Arnaud Laporte, journalist, producer and anchor of the "Tout arrive !" radio programme on France Culture. Tuesday November 10: Is taste innate or can it be acquired? Tuesday November 17: Gastronomy and globalisation: can taste be the same worldwide? Tuesday November 24: Is good wining and dining the preserve of the elite? "Zut", the Grand Palais buzz![]() "Zut" is the Grand Palais' new mascot. Every month, our queen bee, who moved into her own royal quarters on the roof of the Grand Palais on May 7, will be sharing her thoughts with us. Be warned! She stings! Episode 4: Zut stars in a modern fable in the style of La Fontaine Zut the queen bee Has been out on the town And still hasn't come down Long after three… As clubbers join the line For taxis with deejays She makes a bee line For her neighbour and says "Dear ant, would you lend a CD To a dancing queen bee To keep her on the go Until the next FIAC show. I don't have the money, But I can pay you with honey From up on the roof." The miserly ant is aloof: "What were you doing down in the Nave At all hours of the night?" (she' so mean) Said Her Majesty "Enjoying a rave Fit for a queen"… "You were dancing, how charming!" Says the ant (true to character). "In that case, now sing!" |
A word from the presidentIt is an honour for me to take over as President of the Grand Palais in these challenging times when, more than ever, France has a need to share a common culture. Society is currently struggling to find new marks, and France is seeking to reinvent the concept of citizenship ─ such an indelible part of the nation's history and an embodiment of its values ─ enriching it with new sensibility. Culture is an essential part of the new social bonds that are being forged. The Grand Palais has always combined popularity and prestige, staging events as wide-ranging as an impromptu concert by Prince, the FIAC art show, the "Renoir" and "From Byzantium to Istanbul" exhibitions, and scientific experiments in the Palais de la Découverte. My mission will to be make the Grand Palais into a melting pot, a very special place where all the strands that form today's culture can come together.
