The President of the French Republic has appointed Mr. Jean-Paul Cluzel, President of the Etablissement public du Grand Palais, as President of the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, the tutelary organisation responsible for many of France's leading national museums. The appointment was made at the suggestion of the Minister of Culture and Communication.
Mr Cluzel's mission will include a review of the facilities at the Grand Palais, making new proposals to further the renovation and redevelopment of the building, and seeking for ways to consolidate the links between the Grand Palais and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux with a view to forming a major player in the cultural sector.

Event

Quiksilver Tony Hawk Show

Looking for the big thrill? Take the most famous exponent of skateboarding in history, Tony Hawk, the Nave of the Grand Palais, the biggest ramp in Europe, a bill of international stars, an exhibition of urban art and street trends… Put all these ingredients in a shaker and you get an explosive cocktail, autumn's flagship event, to be enjoyed at the Grand Palais on November 20 and 21.
Organised by Quiksilver, the event will include a demonstration of skateboarding by Tony Hawk accompanied by some of the world's top ramp-riders, and supported by a rock concert and leading urban artists like André, the celebrated and prolific Parisian graffiti artist. For would-be skaters who dream of getting their first taste of the discipline in the Grand Palais, free starter tuition will be laid on by Quiksilver athletes. Skate on!

Three questions for...

Tony Hawk

Quadriges: The Grand Palais has welcomed Prince, LeBron James, and Richard Serra. What does it mean to you to come to a venue like this?
It is a huge honour, but it also shows how far skateboarding has come when it is accepted into such a legendary building. I am very excited to show what we are capable of in this iconic palace.

Quadriges: How long will you be in Paris? Do you like our capital city?
I will be there for a few days. Paris is an amazing place and this will be the first time I share it with my young children. I can't wait for them to experience their first authentic crepe!

Quadriges: What is the message that you would like to share with the young and future skaters present at the Grand Palais for your show?
Believe in yourself and do what you love. You will be happy in the end. We are living proof of that.

Event

Art en Capital

The prestigious glass roof of the Grand Palais is to provide the setting for works by over 2,000 artists. Art en Capital is not only the most important meeting of today's painters, it is the only major exhibition to be organised by the artists themselves, independently from the usual dealer channels. Finally, the show has a very special significance at the Grand Palais because it unites five historic salons all with strong links to the building: the Salon des artistes indépendants, the Salon des artistes français, the Salon du dessin et de la peinture à l'eau, and the Salon national des Beaux-Arts et Comparaisons. An artistic promenade, an itinerary through sensorial experience.

FIAC brushes off the crisis!

Visitors at FIAC 2009
© Coll. Grand Palais / François Tomasi
FIAC 2009 was a big success, with brisk business and a palpable enthusiasm among gallery owners, collectors and the public at large. Most observers noted the high quality of this 36th edition which has continued to rise since Martin Bethenod and Jennifer Flay took charge of the FIAC in 2004. This year, visitors particularly appreciated the "modern project", an initiative by 10 gallery owners to present works worthy of top museums by artists like Bacon, Picasso, and Mondrian. The new presentation, in the words of commissioner, Martin Bethenod, "raised the bar". This was testified by the attendance, up by 23% on last year: 80,000 visitors compared with 65,000 in 2008. So the bar is indeed now set at a challenging height for next year!

Publication

The Grand Palais in the FMR review

The latest issue of the celebrated FMR review, once praised by film director Federico Fellini as "the world's finest art review", has just been published. Devoted to the theme of "Museums" the October-November issue has a 14-page article on the Grand Palais. In its celebrated trademark Bodoni type face, the text tells the story of the building illustrated by 21 original photographs by Raphaël Gaillarde (winner of the Visa d'Or 2000) to whom the Grand Palais offered carte blanche in 2008. The photographer offers a selection of his work characterised by strong graphic composition and subtle chiaroscuro interplay. With a poet's eye he has captured instants of pure grace in a stunning tribute to the architectural wealth of the building.

Cultural initiatives

A busy start to the season

From September 2009 to June 2010, the Grand Palais will again be opening its doors to high schools, more particularly pupils and teachers of literature and art history at the lycée Jacques Feyder. The aim will be to stimulate awareness of what life in a cultural institution involves, with a focus on young people in particularly challenged educational areas. The pupils will get a glimpse of what goes on backstage in the preparation of events, meet a large number of professionals, and visit the areas that are currently being refurbished.
By making this educational project so central to its mission, the Grand Palais is testifying to its social commitment to equal opportunity and attachment to the French Republic's model of secular education for all. The partnership extends and furthers the programme begun last season, extending it to all students in art history in the 15 to 18 age group at the lycée Jacques-Feyder, and also opening up the scheme to students at a new vocational training class specialised in cultural action.

Tuesdays at the Grand Palais

Tasty Tuesdays in store!

The second season of our Tuesdays at the Grand Palais conference cycle starts this month. The Grand Palais and publisher Presses universitaires de France have chosen to start the season with a cycle devoted to an original and very French theme: gastronomy. The moderator for the cycle is Arnaud Laporte, journalist, producer and anchor of the radio programme Tout arrive ! broadcast by France Culture.
Tuesday November 10: Is taste innate or can it be acquired? with Christian Boudan (historian, specialised in cuisine, author of Géopolitique du goût, PUF), Éric Fréchon (head cook at the Le Bristol Hotel in Paris), Patrick Mac Leod (President of the Institut du goût), Jean-Claude Ribaut (food critic at Le Monde newspaper).
Tuesday November 17: Gastronomy and globalisation: can taste be the same worldwide? with Nicolas Baumert (research lecturer at the Sorbonne, specialised in the geography of food), Guy Martin (chef at the Grand Véfour restaurant), Jean Vitaux (doctor in gastroenterology).
Tuesday November 24: Is good wining and dining the preserve of the elite?
The December cycle will examine the question of "How to present culture".

A word from the president

The decision by the French President and the Minister of Culture and Communication to consolidate the links between the Grand Palais and the Réunion des musées nationaux (Rmn) and to undertake a broader review of the ongoing renovation and redevelopment of the Grand Palais will bring a fresh impulse to all the institutions concerned. Firstly, the Grand Palais will be able to strengthen its mission to develop the building as a whole and schedule its programme in a way that is coherent with that of the National Galleries. Secondly, Rmn, which will at last be able to renovate its own galleries; and finally the Palais de la Découverte, whose scientific and educational contributions are a vital aspect of the project.
The decision is also great news for all those who love the Grand Palais. The artificial partitions, testifying to the different chance occupants and usages the building has been put to over the years, will finally be demolished, re-establishing the original sense of unity and coherence.
