Front pageJours de fêtes![]() From December 18 to January 1 a huge breath of fresh air will sweep through the Grand Palais with a fun event for all the family: "Jours de fêtes"! After the success of the first edition in 2005 (drawing more than 250,000 visitors), the event is back in the Nave, with special lighting designed by François Austerlitz producing a fairytale atmosphere. The event will feature a range of fairground attractions: big wheel, 1900 carousel merry-go-round, "children's world", and an exhibition of unique items from the collection of the Museum of Fairground Arts. Since no party can be successful without music, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Django Reinhardt will pay tribute to gypsy jazz, and the "Manouch" tradition of which Django was a legendary exponent. Thomas Dutronc, David Reinhard Trio, and Moreno are some of the artists who will be on the bill in the Nave. Time to party! Three questions for...Tony Gatlif![]() Quadriges: What does it mean to you to be de invited to the Grand Palais on December 8 for a debate on manouche jazz? It's an honour. It always interests me to talk about Romani music in general and manouche music. Every time I get the chance, I take it with pleasure. Quadriges: Are you happy to see manouche and gypsy jazz on the programme at the Grand Palais as part of Jours de fêtes? It's a dream! When we started, there were no records in the shops except Django Reinhardt and a few tzigane musicians like Boulou Ferré. When I set out to make Swing, my film with the guitarist Tchavolo Schmitt, young people preferred rock and considered manouche jazz to be a thing of the past! A few years on, thanks to the film Gadjo Dilo and musicians like Romane, Stochelo Rosenberg and then Thomas Dutronc, this music has been exported worldwide. Today, it is a great sign of recognition to be invited to the Grand Palais, something we could never have imagined. Quadriges: Can you tell us something about your next film? It's called Liberté and is due out on February 24 in France. It's a film about the deportation of the Romani community from occupied France in 1943. This is a little-known story of these Resistance fighters who were put in concentration camps. The film sets the record straight and repairs the injustice. FocusA skate legend in the Grand Palais![]() © Coll. Grand Palais / F. Tomasi 20,000 is the number of spectators who came to watch the Tony Hawk Show on November 20 and 21 in the Grand Palais. The world's skateboard star set the Nave on fire with a high-octane show featuring some of today's leading ramp-riders. Organised by Quiksilver, the event also offered visitors free introductions to the art of skateboarding. Art was not to be left out: with leading exponents of urban culture joining in the show, including André (Mr A) who drew skates specially for the show. NominationFabrice Lacroix© DR Radio France ph. In September 2006 he joined Radio France as Deputy Director of Finance, subsequently becoming Director of Finance. To start the year To start the yearMonumenta 2010![]() © Didier Plowy / MCC After Anselm Kiefer (2007) and Richard Serra (2008), Monumenta 2010 has invited one of France's leading artists: Christian Boltanski. The narrator and chronicler of individual memory will be presenting an installation designed specially for Monumenta and intended as a powerful experience, on both the physical and psychological levels, a spectacular moment of emotion which calls into question the nature and meaning of humanity. Though a visual work it will also use sound, pursuing the artist's consideration of the limits of humanity and the essential dimension that is memory, while at the same time approaching a new theme: the question of destiny and the ineluctability of death. The exhibition, opens on January 13 2010. It happened at the Grand PalaisArchitecture today![]() The curved gallery © DR Allard Palace The prestigious review Architecture d'Aujourd'hui, founded in the 1930s, launched its new formula thanks to the energy and commitment of architects Jean Nouvel, Alexandre Allard and François Fontès. The launch took place at the Grand Palais on November 5 in an original venue: the curved gallery. Totally unknown to the general public the facility was opened specially for this outstanding event honoured by a visit from the Ministry of Culture and Communication, Frédéric Mitterrand, accompanied by artist Pierre Soulages, designer Philippe Starck and former Minister of Culture and Communication Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres. The doors of the curved gallery were then closed again to enable important restoration work.
