Monumenta 2010: Christian Boltanski - Personnes

January 13 - February 21 2010
Exhibition
The Nave
For its 3rd edition, the Monumenta exhibition has invited one of France's leading artists: Christian Boltanski. The installation, specially designed for Monumenta by the narrator and chronicler of individual memory, is intended as a powerful experience, on both the physical and psychological levels, a spectacular moment of emotion querying the nature and meaning of humanity. Combining visual impact with sound, it will pursue the artist's consideration of the limits of humanity and the essential dimension that is memory, while at the same time approaching a new theme: the question of destiny and the ineluctability of death.

What the dinosaurs ate

December 10 2009 - May 2 2010
Exhibition
Le palais de la Découverte
This new exhibition, stunningly set in a spectacular décor with animated, life-size dinosaurs, will thrill adults and children alike! Dinosaurs are back at the Palais de la découverte. This time visitors will be invited to play the role of the palaeontologist and examine the dietary habits of the strange giants that once roamed the planet. "Vegetarian" dinosaurs thrived on plants but, without grass to feed on, what exactly did they eat? The observation of highly realistic animated models, reconstructed life-size skeletons, and reconstituted archaeological digs with a live demonstration of how dinosaur bones are uncovered are all part of the trail.
Numerous species will be up for scrutiny, from the brachiosaurus to the edmontosaurus, not to forget the tyrannosaurus, the velociraptor, and other stars of the dinosaur age… The dietary behaviour of the oviraptor is specifically spotlighted. This is the only dinosaur whose favourite foods remain a mystery. Throughout the exhibition would-be palaeontologists will be offered a number of sometimes contradictory clues and invited to come to their own conclusions.

On August 30 2008 the virtual tour of the Grand Palais won the FWA (Favorite Website Award Site of the Day). It is a great reward for the twenty members of the project team who, for six months, worked their way through thousands of calculations, photos and drawings.

A look behind the scenes at the making of the virtual tour of grandpalais.fr

The Grand Palais was built in three years, but how long did it take to reconstruct it in 3D computer imagery? From photos to three-dimensional modelling via calculations, lighting and some unexpected challenges, Quadriges explains a technological and artistic achievement: the making of the virtual tour, step by step.

Changing of the colours

May 2008
A major landmark in the Paris skyline at night, the French flag flies proudly on the roof of the Grand Palais. Victim of the vagaries of the weather, it has just been changed. This is always an impressive sight, some 200 feet above ground at the top of the glass roof.
