A hidden treasure
The Fine Arts Staircase is located next to the porch of the main entrance to the Nave on avenue Winston-Churchill. With a door head decorated with a large oval escutcheon and a lion's head, it is topped by a masonry group statue representing Art. In the immense facade, the discrete, wrought iron entrance door through a high pedestal crowned by a statue representing Artistic inspiration, might even go completely unnoticed. Yet on crossing the threshold visitors cannot fail to fall to the charm of the Fine Arts Staircase. Its curvaceous lines are generous and inviting, and its very special atmosphere is warmed by stone staircases, mosaic floors and a fine ensemble of glass tiles forming an oval on the first floor landing. This well-kept secret of the Grand Palais deserves to be rediscovered particularly as it provides the main access to the first-floor galleries.
