Well you wouldn't have because this area of 700 m2 (7,500 sq. ft.) is one of the building's best-kept secrets. Currently closed to the public, it is to be restored and refitted as a new event venue, without disrupting the Nave's ongoing programme. From March 27 to April 26, as it awaits refurbishment, the south-east gallery will be covered with graffiti! Collected by Alain-Dominique Gallizia, 300 of the world's most significant T.A.G. (tag and graffiti) works will be at home against the rough backdrop of the undecorated walls of the gallery, forming the most important testimony to street art for over three generations. With work on the gallery just a few months away, Le T.A.G. au Grand Palais will be a unique event. Three questions for...Alain-Dominique Gallizia, architect and the man behind the T.A.G. project for the Grand Palais![]() Alain-Dominique Gallizia © Pierre Guillien Quadriges: What gave you the idea for the project? I first discovered the world of tags in 1992. At the time I was doing volunteer work for a foundation distributing sleeping bags to the homeless at the Gare du Nord station. This is where I first came across the tags that covered the trains and platform walls. As for the project itself, the inspiration was twofold. As an architect I am obliged to have my name inscribed on the stone for posterity, yet artists are not even entitled to use the temporary fencing at the building sites. When I bought an artist's studio to set up my own practice a tagger who signed himself "amour" came to visit. I invited him to take advantage of the studio to paint a canvas on the love theme. He said he couldn't do it because his entire message was contained in his tag. So I asked the other palisade artists to create a double canvas on which they wrote their name on the left and executed a work of their choice on the love theme on the right. For the format, I chose horizontal canvases reminiscent of the shape of wagons and walls. I set a size limit so that the canvases would fit in my Smart and I could transport them easily. Quadriges: What does it mean to you to be exhibiting in the unique venue of the South-East Gallery of the Grand Palais? Bringing these artists the recognition they deserve by showing tags in a prestigious setting like the Grand Palais is the culmination of my personal commitment. Symbolically staged in a roughcast environment, the exhibition will, I hope, be the first of many. The Grand Palais is fulfilling its tradition of breaking with tradition! On a personal level it is especially poignant for me to be inaugurating the south-east gallery because we began by demolishing the library, a vestige of the architecture faculty where I did my studies. Quadriges: What kind of public do you expect? This exhibition is all about discovery and recognition. Tag is an art form that is there for all to see but that people do not really see because of its negative image. What I am hoping is that the public will be prepared to take the risk of discovering a new art form, understanding it and no longer seeing it as defacement. FocusPress conferenceThe auction of the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé collection smashes all the records![]() © Coll. Grand Palais, photo François Tomasi The Grand Palais was in the spotlight with nearly 34,000 people coming to the Nave to see the fabulous collection of art works put together by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. The scenography by Nathalie Crinière recreated the magical atmosphere of Yves Saint Laurent's downtown Paris apartment in rue de Babylone. For the sale, 1,200 chairs were laid out along with video screens to display the figures in real time as the bids rose, and help bidders view the auctioneers' sign language. The 700 items on sale had been estimated at a total of between 200 and 300 millions euros, but in an electrifying atmosphere the sale smashed all the records. 373.5 million euros were raised and will be donated chiefly to the foundation set up by Pierre Bergé to support medical research. Among the records broken were the Brancusi sculpture, Madame L.R., which went for 28.1 million euros. Matisse's Cuckoos on a blue and pink carpet went through the roof at no less than 32 million euros, far above the 12-18 million-euro estimation. Marcel Duchamp's "ready-made" fragrance bottle Belle haleine, eau de voilette fetched 7.9 million euros. Finally, the collection's iconic "dragon armchair" by Eileen Gray went for ten times its valuation, fetching 21.90 M€. The once-in-a-lifetime sale of this unique collection fulfilled its promise as a momentous and emotional occasion. Work due to start on March 12![]() The door through to the VIP lounge is to be reopened © Coll. Grand Palais, photo François Tomasi On March 12, the President of the Grand Palais, Yves Saint-Geours, will present this year's scheduled refurbishment projects to the media. The brief will include an emotional moment as the first hammer blows are dealt to the doorway between the Nave and the salon d'honneur, bricked up for the last 60 years. In January 2010, the public will at last be able to admire the new VIP lounge, a vast area beneath a 1,200 m2 (nearly 13,000 sq. ft.) glass roof, which, once restored, will regain its former splendour and provide a perfect setting for new high-profile events. We'll be bringing you full details of the restoration programme in next month's Quadriges! Art ParisMarch 19 to 23What is the state of play in contemporary art? Where are today's talents? These are some of the questions that Art Paris will be attempting to address, by offering the Nave to some one hundred of the world's most enterprising galleries. All forms of modern and contemporary artistic expression will be on show, from Free Figuration to Street Art via photography and even cartoon strip, which make its maiden appearance at Art Paris. The event will continue into the night with "Les nuits d'Art Paris", a select, cosy and ephemeral night spot, from 9:00 p.m. till 2:00 a.m.. With the help of a DJ, this will be a great opportunity to wind down and meet new faces in the surroundings of art. Tuesdays in the Grand PalaisA new cycle![]() Our Tuesdays in the Grand Palais continue with a new cycle of lecture-debates, taking a central theme — "50 years of cultural policy" — that is particularly topical as France celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of its Ministry of Culture. Tuesday March 3: "Is culture for all just pie in the sky?" with Bruno Maresca, Philippe Yong, Jean-François Zygel. Moderator: Geneviève de Cazaux, journalist and reporter at the TF1 TV channel. The cycle continues on Tuesday March 10 with: "Is French cultural diversity a form of resistance or just pride?" with Françoise Benhamou, Pierre Moulinier, Pascal Rogard, Bertrand Tavernier. Moderator: Philippe Petit. The next cycle will focus on the theme of fashion. |
A word from the presidentContinuous motion! This might well be the motto of the Nave of the Grand Palais. The new projection room was opened as recently as last December, yet enhancement work at the Grand Palais is already set to continue. Major projects will soon be under way to create new areas or restore existing ones: namely, the south-east gallery and, above all, in the heart of the building, the VIP Lounge that will be restored to the original splendour of the 1900 Salon d'honneur. Such is the ongoing metamorphosis of this unclassifiable building that has just smashed all the records with the sale of the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé collection. All these changes are designed to bring you an ever more ambitious programme of events! Yves Saint-Geours President, Etablissement public du Grand Palais … and his bookYves Saint-Geours' new book on the Grand Palais, has just been published in the prestigious Découvertes Gallimard collection. From the inception of the Grand Palais, when architects submitted their competitive bids for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, through more than a century of events drawing millions of visitors, and the trials and tribulations endured by the monument, to its recent renaissance… This complete history of the Grand Palais is illustrated by 140 documents, many of which are hitherto unpublished, shedding a fresh light on the building. Top Com award for 2009The Grand Palais has been awarded a Silver Top Com for its logo. The jury, which particularly appreciated the oral presentation, selected the project for its Special Award in the Design category. ![]() Don't miss thisArt Paris March 19 to 23 Nave of the Grand Palais Over the last 10 years, Art Paris, a fair for modern and contemporary art, has become a highlight on the international art calendar and a major event on the Paris scene.
