The tympanum

The tympanum in the Nave

A central feature of the architecture of the Grand Palais, the tympanum in the Nave embellishes the Great Staircase. The decoration was not completed in time for the inauguration of the building in 1900.

Only a few ephemeral decorations have enlivened this feature over the years. In 2009, a contemporary artist will be commissioned to create a work covering part of the tympanum, using either paint or video media.
