Musée d’Art Moderne André Malraux – MuMa Le Havre

The Musée d’Art moderne André Malraux is linked to Pissarro’s series of paintings of Norman ports on more than one count. When Pissarro was staying in Le Havre in summer 1903, the museum’s acquisitions committee offered to buy two oil paintings of The Outer Harbour of Le Havre for 4,000 francs. These two canvases were the first and only works bought directly from the artist by a French museum during his lifetime. Pissarro returned to Paris and died hardly three months later.

The paintings of Norman ports belong to the series of cityscapes painted by Pissarro in Paris and Normandy, but this corpus of nearly 120 pieces forms a group of its own which has never been studied separately.
