Ce qu'il faut savoir sur Mario Benjamin - plasticien
Mario Benjamin est né en 1964 à Port-au-Prince, il vit et travaille en Haïti
Il vient d’une famille dont la mère est pharmacienne et le père architecte
Autodidacte, il se met à la peinture à 14 ans, profitant d’un talent de dessinateur
Il expose pour la première fois à 20 ans et vend toutes ses toiles
Il a formé son regard en Haïti, aux États-Unis et en Europe
Il est le chef de file de l’art contemporain et pionnier de la performance en Haïti
Il utilise des matériaux peu conventionnels dans ses tableaux et dans ses installations vidéos, photographiques et sonores réalisées in situ.
Exigeant et influencé par toute forme d’art, il est invité a participer à de nombreuses biennales internationales et tient à se démarquer des stéréotypes couramment admis sur l’ « art haïtien ».
Il a aussi pris part à des expositions collectives comme la Kreyol Factory à Paris en 2009. Mais également exposé seul à l’Art Museum of the Americas de Washington (2000), au Museum of Contemporary Arts de Miami (2003), à la galerie Afronova de Johannesburg (2007) ou au Botanique de Bruxelles en 2010.
Il a contribué à l’émergence des communautés d’artistes comme Rivière Froide, Atis ou Rezistans
