Grand Palais Éphémère

Grand Palais Éphémère

The Grand Palais Éphémère

Designed by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the Grand Palais Éphémère is a temporary building on the Champ-de-Mars. Its wooden frame and environmental credentials make it a remarkable building and one resolutely rooted in our time. This piece of architectural prowess stands on a site whose history, like that of the Grand Palais, is closely linked with the Universal Exhibitions of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Privatization

Major events at the historic monument are still taking place in the Grand Palais Éphémère and there are some time slots left, so get planning!

A temporary events venue

The Grand Palais Éphémère is an events venue intended to host the major events usually held in the Nave, such as the FIAC, Paris Photo, the Saut Hermès and the Chanel fashion shows, during the renovation of the Grand Palais. An extensive programme has also been rolled out by the Rmn-Grand Palais for the general public, including exhibitions, live performances and events open to all audiences, held throughout the year. The Grand Palais Éphémère is also an Olympic site and will host the judo, wrestling, wheelchair rugby and para judo competitions.

The architectural project

Located on the Plateau Joffre, the Grand Palais Éphémère follows the composition of the Champ-de-Mars. Between the École Militaire and the Eiffel Tower, it stands at 20 metres tall, without exceeding the École Militaire, which stands 16 metres taller. The statue of the Marshall Joffre is incorporated into the building and has been fully restored for this installation. The 44 monumental arches of the Grand Palais Ephémère were assembled on site in just three months.

An environmentally responsible building

The structure of the building is designed to be modular and can be reused in many different configurations after is it taken down from the Champs-de-Mars in autumn 2024. The modularity, the use of sustainable materials and the structure of the Grand Palais Ephémère make it a project fully in synch with the environmental imperatives of our time.

The wood used for the structure is PEFC labelled, meaning it comes from a sustainably managed forest. Wood is a carbon sink: it is estimated that 1,956 tonnes of CO2 will have been absorbed by the frame! The double skin that encloses the building has significant acoustic, thermal and ventilating properties, thereby using less energy. The transparent textile skin that can be seen from outside is made from a mineral-based rather than petroleum-based polymer, generating 90% less energy during manufacture compared to glass; it is also fully recyclable.
