La belle angèle de Paul Gauguin : un portrait tout en symboles

En 1889, Gauguin achève le portrait d'Angèle Satre, hôtelière à Pont-Aven (Bretagne), qui était considérée comme l’une des plus belles femmes de la région.
Si Gauguin considère les populations rencontrées durant ses voyages comme parties intégrantes de sa représentation, il aime emprunter ses motifs à différentes sources, donnant à ses œuvres une grande portée symbolique.
Telle une estampe japonaise, le portrait est découpé au moyen d’un cercle, séparé du fond qui est essentiellement décoratif. Le peintre déforme également les espaces en enfreignant les usages traditionnels de la perspective et de l’unité spatiale. Le caractère symbolique de l’œuvre est renforcé dans la figuration d’éléments incongrus, comme la statuette anthropomorphe qu’il place au même niveau que son modèle.
Même si Gauguin trouvait que ce portrait était très réussi, ce ne fut malheureusement pas l’avis de la belle Angèle qui se serait exclamé « Quelle horreur ! » en découvrant l’œuvre.
