Antoine Caron

The Theatre of History

From 5 April 2023 To 3 July 2023

Musée national de la Renaissance - château d’Écouen

Description

Antoine Caron is an artist who is inseparable from the French Renaissance, having worked successively for five monarchs, from François I to Henri IV, and for the queen mother Catherine de Médicis. In this perspective, the exhibition Antoine Caron (1521-1599). The Theatre of History aims to bring one of the most influential French artists of the second half of the 16th century back to the forefront.

Bringing together more than 90 works, some of which have never been shown before, in the heart of the Château d'Écouen, in an architecture and décor contemporary with Antoine Caron's creations, the exhibition bears witness to the multiple facets of the genius and influence of this forgotten artist, as well as to the versatility of the painter's profession during the Renaissance.

Underlying the exhibition are fascinating issues of Renaissance art: the role of drawing, the relationship between artist and patron, and the questioning of the traditional boundaries between major and minor art, between artist and craftsman. For the first time in France since the 16th century, the eight tapestries of La Tenture des Valois commissioned by Catherine de Medici, an exceptional and emblematic loan from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, are brought together.

Exhibition organised by the Réunion des musées nationaux - Grand Palais and the Musée national de la renaissance - Château d'Ecouen
