D’origine américaine, les Stein s’installent à Paris au début du XXe siècle : Gertrude, écrivain d’avant-garde, avec son frère Léo, rue de Fleurus ; Michael, l’aîné, avec son épouse Sarah, rue Madame. Premiers acheteurs de Matisse et de Picasso, ils accueillent chez eux toute l’avant-garde artistique et constituent ainsi une des plus étonnantes collections d’art moderne.
