Enter the intimate and powerful world of Nan Goldin, icon of contemporary photography, with a major retrospective of her slideshows and videos at the Grand Palais from March 18 to June 21, 2026. An intimate journey that traces nearly five decades of creation in motion. Here are details of the works you'll see in the exhibition.

The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1981-2022)

Slideshow / 41'52'' - Courtesy Nan Goldin and Gagosian

Nan Goldin's masterwork, this slideshow brings together nearly seven hundred images accompanied by an eclectic soundtrack. First shown on the New York club circuit in the late 1970s, it has been constantly reissued. The current version, produced especially for the exhibition, is dedicated to the community that disappeared during the AIDS epidemic.

The Other Side (1992-2021)

Slideshow / 16'44'' - Courtesy Nan Goldin and Gagosian

Named after a Boston bar, this slideshow pays tribute to the artist's transgender friends through photographs taken between 1972 and 2010. The work celebrates their "gender euphoria" and the possible transcendences of identity.

Sirens (2019-2020)

Single-channel video / 16'1'' - Courtesy Nan Goldin and Gagosian

Echoing the sirens of Greek mythology, this hypnotic video transports the viewer into the sensuality and ecstasy of a drugged trance state. Goldin's first work made entirely from found footage (the re-use of existing fims), featuring scenes from thirty films, it is accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Mica Levi.

Memory Lost (2019-2021)

Digital slideshow / 24'26'' - Courtesy Nan Goldin and Gagosian

This work traces a life through the prism of drug addiction, blending archival footage, contemporary interviews and 1980s answering machine recordings. The original music is by Mica Levi, with contributions from CJ Calderwood and Soundwalk Collective.

Sisters, Saints, Sibyls (2004-2022)

Three-channel video with sculptural elements and ephemera / 35'17'' - Kramlich Collection, Courtesy Nan Goldin and Gagosian

This immersive installation combines video and sculptural elements, offering a unique sensory experience that confronts the viewer with the presence of Goldin's beloved feminine and mystical figures.

This work can be seen at the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière, where the installation was originally conceived in 2004 as part of the Festival d'Automne.

Stendhal Syndrome (2024)

Digital slideshow / 26'2'' - Courtesy Nan Goldin and Gagosian

Inspired by six myths from Ovid's Metamorphoses, this work brings the mythological tales to life through portraits of Goldin's loved ones. It explores the phenomenon described by Stendhal as a loss of awareness in the face of the intensity of artistic beauty.

Gaza (project in progress)

Nan Goldin is currently focusing on the Palestinian cause. This new project, which she is currently working on, is presented in the exhibition. The work allows the public to collectively experience the ongoing tragedy, through footage filmed by friends, journalists on the ground and local residents. Constructed in a loop and deliberately unfinished, it aims to be a light in the darkness and a constant reminder of what must not be forgotten.
