À l’école, Rodin est un mauvais élève, pour ne pas dire médiocre. Il ne maîtrise ni l’orthographe ni la syntaxe et il rechigne à prendre la parole. Ses moyens d’expression de prédilection sont déjà la terre et le crayon.
Malgré cet atout, Rodin échoue trois fois au concours d’entrée de l’école des Beaux-Arts, le privant du prestigieux prix de Rome, le sésame des artistes. Il n’a alors pas un sou et tout à accomplir. Les années de travail qu’il passera en tant qu’artisan le formeront pour le reste de sa vie.
Heureusement, Rodin bénéficie du soutien de ses parents dans son choix de devenir un artiste. Né en 1840 à Paris dans une fratrie de 5 enfants, ses parents l’entourent et son père lui dira même : « Si tu veux être artiste, alors sois le meilleur ».
Rodin lui doit sa première œuvre : le buste de son père, Jean-Baptiste Rodin, réalisée en 1860.
