For the first and only time in France, sixteen majestic contemporary tapestries designed by Danish artists are on show at the Grand Palais. An encounter between tradition and creation, where materials and colors reveal all the richness of an exceptional craftsmanship.
Woven by Mobilier National artisans from sketches by Danish artists Kirstine Roepstorff, Bjørn Nørgaard, Tal R and Alexander Tovborg, these monumental tapestries highlight the wealth of ancestral craftsmanship and contemporary innovation in this field. The project has its origins in a generous donation from the New Carslberg Foundation in 2018, to mark the 750th anniversary of the Danish royal castle, where the works will subsequently be exhibited.
The exhibition unveils the creative process behind the tapestries, from initial sketches to the final weave. In dialogue with historical tapestries, it reveals the continuity of craftsmanship passed down through centuries. Materials, colors, and gestures come to life in a sensory journey that invites visitors to explore each stage of production. Workshops and activities extend the experience, offering everyone the chance to discover these centuries-old techniques while exploring their connections to modern technologies.
