Les deux amants de Rodin, trois tonnes d’amour au Grand Palais !
Quelle histoire se cache derrière la plus sensuelle des sculptures d'Auguste Rodin ? Levons le voile sur une œuvre devenue un grand symbole de l'amour, exposée en 2017 au Grand Palais.
En 1882, Auguste Rodin réalise Le Baiser, un couple enlacé s’embrassant. Aucun détail ne trahit l’identité des deux amants sculptés par Rodin. Pourtant, cette sculpture est inspirée de l’histoire de Paolo et Francesca, deux personnages issus de La Divine Comédie, un poème de Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). Alors qu’ils lisent un roman d’amour courtois, Francesca da Rimini et son beau-frère, Paolo Malatesta, découvrent leur amour et cèdent à leurs sentiments. Rodin choisi d’immortaliser cet élan amoureux. La suite de l’histoire raconte que les amants sont ont été surpris puis tués par le mari de Francesca, les condamnant à errer dans les Enfers.
Cette sculpture a été conçue pour figurer sur La Porte de L’Enfer, mais Rodin réalise ensuite qu’elle est en contradiction avec le grand projet de son œuvre. Il en fait donc une œuvre autonome.
Souple, lisse, sensuelle, cette sculpture a immédiatement séduit le public lorsque Rodin décide de l’exposer en 1887. Le public la baptise Le Baiser, traduisant bien le côté universel de l’œuvre. Le Baiser est devenu l’image de l’amour.
L’Etat français commande à Rodin une version en marbre agrandie de 3 tonnes, qu’il achèvera et exposera au public en 1898.
