A RETHINK GUIDED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS
Firstly, the scope of the project has been expanded: since the end of 2018, the façades and statues of the Grand Palais have deteriorated significantly requir- ing all these structures to be cov- ered in protective netting in 2019. This unexpected phenomenon was not taken into account in the original project. This cost of this essential restoration work must come out of the global renovation budget set aside for the project.
Moreover, the holding of the Olympic and Paralympic events in 2024 at the Grand Palais and the delays caused to the project since March 2020 as a result of the health crisis have led the Ministry of Culture and the Rmn - Grand Palais to act to mitigate the risks of overruns on the works schedule and project budgets since such risks are not now acceptable.
In accordance with the provi- sions of the Heritage Code, the Chief Architect for Historical Monuments responsible for the Grand Palais, François Chatillon, will act as project manager for the restoration and standards up- grade, under the control of the Regional Registry of Historical Monuments. The Rmn - Grand Palais will also appoint a designer architect through a specific com- petition for the renovation of the Grand Palais.
