THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT
A GREATER ECOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL FOCUS In agreement with the Ministry of Culture, the Rmn - Grand Palais has opted for a more sober renovation project, limiting the impact on the building as well as on the environment: Rediscovery of the initial Grand Palais spaces and
the spaces arranged by Vivien when the National Galleries were developed at the initiative of André Malraux in the 60 s;
Restricting demolition to a minimum in order to restore the building's original circulation layout;
Abandoning of levelling and earthmoving opera- tions under the nave and in the classified wood- ed areas and the protected green spaces near the building.
THE STRUCTURING PRINCIPLES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMME WERE CONFIRMED This new direction retains the main renovation principles of the original architectural project:
Renovate the building to ensure it complies with ap- plicable fire safety and accessibility standards so the Grand Palais can be accessible to all and in greater numbers;
Restore the building s historic circuits, from north to south (Champs-Elysées Seine connection) and east to west (connection between the Nave of the Grand Palais and the Palais de la Découverte located in the Palais d Antin).
Restore the nave and balconies to increase capacity and control temperatures;
Create a single entrance for the public to both the Grand Palais and the Palais de la Découverte
Develop a joint arts and science offer for young people by creating a Children s Gallery;
Create a dedicated reception area for school groups and teachers;
Offer event organizers spaces that are up to their expectations;
Maintain six exhibition galleries for the Grand Palais cultural offer and create two immersive galleries to address the public s new needs;
Completely overhaul the Palais d Antin to host the new scenography of the Palais de la Découverte and create a temporary science exhibition space.
