Reduce the ecological footprint of our products Given the health crisis in 2020 and the difficulties en- countered upstream and downstream of supply chains, it was not possible in 2020 to establish new partnerships and processes for products and exhibitions. Therefore the Rmn - Grand Palais consolidated the actions already put in place and worked on an action plan for 2021, no- tably in the framework of the Targets and Performance Contract it has with its supervisory authorities.
Responsible publishing and stationery Stationery, cards and books generate the highest vol- umes of sales in our shops. The 2016 carbon footprint study estimated that 218 tons of books and stationery materials were sold across all our bookshops and stores.
In terms of publishing, the Rmn - Grand Palais has been working to reduce its impacts since its first 100% recy- cled paper exhibition guide for the "Lives of Garbage" exhibition. The approach is now global, not only for short circuits but also for the design, manufacture and trans- port of products. For example, the youth book collection Des jeux, de l art, une histoire!, designed in collaboration with French publisher Minus, embody this approach by favouring short circuits: the books are printed in France using vegetable inks and FSC-labelled forest paper. Minus also entrusts its logistics management to an ESAT (rehabilitation through employment) organization.
In addition to French environmental standards and re- quirements, the Rmn - Grand Palais imposes specifica- tions on its suppliers: paper supplied must meet the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) standards; printers must comply with the ISO14001 or ISO900 standards or the Imprim vert label, depending on the country. Only PEFC or FSC certified paper is used in our stationery ranges. Postcards, copies and notebooks are made from chlorine-free pulp.
Stationery products and writing accessories are also manufactured in France or Europe (Italy or Scotland), according to the skills required. This geographic prox- imity enables the Rmn - Grand Palais to be flexible and responsive.
In addition, the performance clauses in the Rmn - Grand Palais publishing contracts provide for: Sourcing raw materials from suppliers who commit to
protecting the environment; Using less toxic or polluting products; Developing and implementing efficient production
practices by applying the three "R s (Reduce energy and water consumption, Reuse and Recycle);
Sorting and storing waste according to the type and risk involved: disposal of waste through approved channels.
More generally, each new publication project is exam- ined closely to avoid excess production: Particular attention is paid to format and page layout
in order to optimise the content volume in a smaller number of pages;
Digital publishing enables on-demand printing as well as free online access to these publications for the public;
Careful inventory management helps avoid the pulp- ing and recycling of works (in particular through price discounts and donations of works).
