MAN RAY AND FASHION The Man Ray and Fashion exhibition, initially scheduled from 9 April to 17 July 2020 at the Musée du Luxembourg, finally opened from 23 September to 29 October. Man Ray, a figure of modernity, has never had his work explored from a fashion perspective. Man Ray arrived in Paris in 1921 and played an active role in artistic life in interwar Paris and in surrealism in particular. He initially focused on portraiture before moving into the world of fashion. Very quickly, the leading designers called on him even though fashion photography was still in the infancy and the style was strictly documentary: Madeleine Vionnet, Coco Chanel, Augusta Bernard, Louise Boulanger, and above all, Elsa Schiaparelli. Magazines soon gave him pride of place. Man Ray began to publish his portraits in the society pages of Vogue and Vanity Fair, but it was Harper s Bazaar, which, over the course of the 1930s, would make him a famous fashion photographer.
